Planting Native Plants

Planting Instructions

Keep your plants watered well and in a partly shaded area until you are ready to plant. Plants should be planted within one week of receiving your kit for the best results.

1. Unroll your Garden Design Guide. Clear an area the size of the outer oval of the guide, ensuring the area is free of grass and weeds.

2. Use the landscape pins to keep the Garden Design Guide in Place. You can either leave them in the ground or reuse them when you are finished.

3. Organize plants by type, referring to labels and the Garden Design Key. Then, place each plant on its corresponding shape on the guide.

4. For each plant:

• Dig a hole through the guide roughly the size of its pot.

• Remove the plant from the pot. If the roots are tangled, gently loosen by carefully pulling them apart. • Place the plant into the hole, ensuring the base of the plant/top of the roots are level with the ground.

• Add soil around the plant to refill the hole and pat down firmly. 5. Mulch. When adding mulch, it should be about 2-3 inches in height. • Spread mulch on all blank areas of the guide in between plants.

• Do not mulch on top of the plants - this would prevent water from reaching the roots. • Spread additional mulch around the plants, extending out from the oval outline about 6 inches.

• After mulching, remove any excess paper by cutting the guide. 6. Water your new native plants well - about 30 seconds of watering for each plant. 7.
